“Small changes lead to big things.” – author unknown.

The concept that small changes lead to big results is a popular philosophy put forth by author James Cleary of Atomic Habits. Cleary stated, “All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. But as that decision is repeated, a habit sprouts and grows stronger.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, taking a small step into your growth zone means leaving your comfort zone to embrace learning, self-discovery, and minor discomfort.
What does it mean to move from our comfort zone to our growth zone?
Positivepsychology.com outlined the zones concisely. To step into your growth zone, you will pass through your fear and learning zones.
- In your comfort zone, you feel safe and in control.
- In your fear zone, you lack confidence, find excuses, and may be affected by other’s opinions.
- In your learning zone, you will deal with challenges and problems. You will acquire new skills. You will extend your comfort zone.
- In your growth zone, you will find purpose, live your dreams, set new goals, and realize your aspirations.
Comfort zones are where most of us spend our daily lives, wrote Holly Garcia of Scarrymommy.com. Whereas, the growth zone is a place where you pivot, adjust, and see how resilient you are.
Tristan, founder and CEO of Evolve to Grow and a business coach, wrote that it is normal to feel a sense of struggle or get frustrated trying to wrap your ahead around changes you need to make to your business systems to grow.
Similarly, you may feel tense or anxious about the idea of making any changes to a daily routine, as it is familiar to you. You find comfort in that routine. When you are in your comfort zone, you may not be challenged. You can take it easy. What I have learned the hard way is staying in my comfort zone for too long can cause resistance, whereas, stretching myself to try new things initially I doubt myself but through practice I gain confidence.
According to a Reputation Crafters’ article “7 Steps to enter Your Growth Zone,” you first must recognize your comfort zone. Where do you feel most comfortable? Reflect on the various areas of your life: routines, daily tasks, and social interactions. What is beneficial and what is holding you back?
Secondly, acknowledge the fear zone. List your fears and anxieties associated with stepping out the comfort zone.
“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown,” wrote H. P. Lovecraft.
It will not happen overnight or immediately. I tell myself that small changes matter. It takes focus, intention, and consistency to make it happen. Slowly at first, your mindset will start shifting from seeking comfort to taking new risks. The risks do not have to be big. As you push through your fears, you gain a new perspective.
I have assessed where I am. I shifted my position, taking a different look at my surroundings. I asked myself, “how did I not notice this before?” I evaluated what was needed to move forward. When I used curiosity to do so, I found it helpful. Curiosity is a highly effective tool to move from comfort to fear to learning to growth.
Here are some small, actionable steps:
- Start small. Choose a manageable challenge.
- Seek curiosity and lead with curiosity. I have learned that I cannot be curious and anxious at the same time. Curiosity can be the diving board into new ventures.
- Change your routine. Vary how you approach your daily tasks. Pick one task a day.
- Initiate a conversation with someone that you do not know well. Expand your circle of people that you know. Go somewhere new, meet different people.
- Learn something small. Spend 10-15 minutes watching a tutorial on a skill you want to learn. Pick something new to try each week.
- Practice vulnerability. Ask for help and feedback.
- Challenge your beliefs. Are there any beliefs that are preventing yourself from growing? How do you define failure?
- Celebrate small wins.
Garcia wrote that it is essential and crucial to give yourself space to fail. You can learn to evaluate your limits.
I admit that I have struggled in the past to give myself room to fail. I am working on reframing what it means to fail so I can move past it and not cling to past mistakes and failures. It is a slow process and I had to remind myself that I am a work in progress.
Failure is a learning opportunity and steppingstone not a stumbling block wrote the Reputation Crafters.
As you leave the comfort zone, take time to recognize what really scares you. As you move forward, take on a new risk. As many pivots it takes, you will build upon your existing resilience. You can become stronger and more confident. It is worth taking that small step.
Small changes do matter. Remember focus, intention, and consistency.
